Alejandro Casas

Alejandro Casas is a painter based in Utrecht whose practice centers on the body as a space of vulnerability, intimacy, and emotional tension. Working primarily with figurative painting, he explores moments of suspension, when the body is neither fully active nor at rest. Having studied in Colombia and Buenos Aires, his work is shaped by migration, adaptation, and dialogue.

Works

My current work is closely connected to my experience of migration and how it affects the body physically, emotionally, and psychologically. Through the human figure I explore states of adaptation, displacement, and suspended energy.

I mainly work with oil paint, often on found or recycled surfaces, adapting to the materials and spaces available to me. The scale and format of the work remain flexible and respond to both the studio conditions and the ideas I am exploring.

In this way the materials themselves become part of the narrative, reflecting improvisation, transformation, and resilience. My practice pays close attention to how the body inhabits space and how intimate gestures can reveal broader experiences of movement and adaptation.
